At Repertory Company High School for Theatre Arts, we are committed to offering students the opportunity to explore and experience the Arts not only in their classes and extra-curricular activities, but also through a broad range of inter-disciplinary Arts partnerships. We have joined together with world-class Arts institutions throughout the city to provide experiences, resources and opportunities that are beyond the scope of our daily class work. Through our partnerships with these institutions, our students have the opportunity to meet working artists, see a wide range of professional productions, write and publish their own work, participate in performance competitions that award scholarships, and much more. The following is a brief summary of our current partnerships:
Roundabout Theatre Company is the nation’s most influential not-for-profit theatre company, as well as one of New York City’s leading cultural institutions. Repertory has entered into a School-wide Partnership with Roundabout, which gives the school access to a wide variety of programming, theatre tickets, and performance opportunities. In addition to the Postcard Production experience offered to all incoming 9thgraders at Freshman Orientation, Roundabout’s teaching artists work with our 12th graders to complete the script-writing portion of their Senior Exit Projects.
The Town Hall Educational Outreach Programs serve over 6,500 students annually in theatre, stagecraft, dance, music, and visual arts. Town Hall teaching artists work closely with classroom teachers to plan and coordinate programs that strengthen curriculum connections. Many programs culminate with student performances that showcase students’ skills for families, school administrators, and peers.
Teaching artists bring interactive art workshops into New York City elementary, middle, and high school classrooms. These activities introduce new skills that foster creative expression, critical thinking, self-awareness, personal discipline, and build self-esteem.
LeAp Onstage is a year-long playwriting, play production and theater appreciation program. Working with theater teachers and professional directors, students draft their own 10-minute plays. A team of professionals selects one play from each school for an invitation-only live performance on a professional stage. Repertory students participate in their Junior year, and, in addition to the play selected for professional performance, selected plays are chosen for our New Play Festival in the Spring.
The August Wilson Monologue Competition is a national scholarship contest based around performance of monologues from Wilson’s Century Cycle. Each year, LeAp artists work with Repertory students to prepare for the competition, at which we have had four national finalists over the past three years.
The Young People’s Chorus of New York City is a multicultural youth chorus internationally renowned not only for its superb virtuosity and brilliant showmanship, but as a model for an inclusive society that is being replicated globally. Founded by Artistic Director Francisco J. Núñez 25 years ago, this ground-breaking program harnesses the power of music to fulfill the potential of every child. Repertory has become one of YPC’s Satellite Schools, which brings in a YPC conducting fellow and professional accompanist for weekly rehearsals with our 10th graders, culminating in a concert at the 92nd St. Y.
The Shakespeare Society is a nonprofit organization dedicated to increasing the enjoyment, understanding, and appreciation of William Shakespeare’s works through performance, commentary, and educational activities.
New York City Center is a renowned cultural and artistic institution, offering long-term residencies to some of the most celebrated performance ensembles in New York City. Repertory has partnered with City Center to offer choreographer-in-residence master classes to our elite dance ensemble, Rep Dance.
Little Kids Rock is a national nonprofit that transforms children’s lives by restoring and revitalizing music education in disadvantaged public schools. As a partner school, Repertory has received 30 acoustic guitars, as well as training and materials to implement the Little Kids Rock band curriculum.
